How to improve thyroid health with sunlight

Hormone Health

So, it’s true, we’re basically very complicated plants. 🪴

Our bodies REQUIRE adequate hydration, nutrition, AND natural sunlight to thrive.

Sunlight is essential for regulating our circadian rhythm (the internal process that governs the sleep-wake cycle). However, with most of us spending a significant amount of time indoors under artificial lights and glued to bright screens, our body’s internal clock can get confused. These artificial lights signal to our bodies that it’s daytime, regardless of the actual time, disrupting our natural rhythm. But different wavelengths of UV light from the sun help regulate our circadian rhythm, ensuring the release of hormones at the right times.

For instance, cortisol levels are typically higher in the morning, helping us wake up. However, excessive screen time, especially before bed, can throw cortisol release off track. Similarly, progesterone peaks in the morning, while FSH and LH peak in the afternoon. Disruptions to our circadian rhythm can affect hormone release timing, leading to imbalances. And let’s not forget about melatonin, crucial for deep, restful sleep. If our body thinks it’s midday when it’s actually bedtime, falling asleep becomes a struggle.

Feeling sluggish during the day and battling insomnia at night? Here are some tips to help:

☀️Limit phone and computer use until after sunrise.

☀️Use a Circadian app to track sunrise and sunset times in your area.

☀️Step outside at sunrise or within 20 minutes afterward for a dose of natural light.

☀️Consistency is key, so aim to be outside at sunrise daily.

☀️Take screen breaks during the day and prioritize natural light exposure midday.

☀️Catch the sunset outdoors to signal your body that it’s time to wind down.

☀️Minimize screen time after sunset and opt for lamps instead of overhead lighting.

☀️Swap screen time before bed for activities like reading or journaling to help relax your eyes.

Stay vibrant, my friends!
